Christmas You Can't Have

There's an interesting story here. I finally found a copy of this record by The Quinto Sisters. It features the first version of A Holly Jolly Christmas ever released, even before Burl Ives made a classic out of it. But I can't share it with and you can't purchase it anywhere. You can, however, listen to it over at The Quinto Sisters website. It seems they don't want anybody to share it out, and I have to respect that. I figure maybe if enough people head over to their site and learn more about this great music, the greater the chance that it will receive a new release someday. At least that's what I'm hoping by mentioning it here. Go give this a listen!

Even Better In Stereo

Santa came to see me earlier this year, and he brought a couple of presents. One of them was this stereo copy of an album I've loved and shared for a long time here at the blog. If this isn't already a favorite of yours, I think it soon will be. As good as the mono version has been all these years, the stereo version is just that much better! The Jimmy Joyce Singers were one of those groups who rarely appeared on their own (although they somehow released two different Christmas albums), but they often appeared as backup on other artists records. And the orchestra they've chosen to work with here belongs to none other than the great Billy May. There are even a couple of instrumentals on here that are all Billy May. So be certain you download this, it's probably one of the best shares I'm going to give you this year. Here's The Jimmy Joyce Singers With Orchestra Conducted By Billy May-A Christmas To Remember (Warner Bros WS 1237, Vitaphonic Stereo, 1958).

1. We Wish You A Merry Christmas
2. The Twelve Days Of Christmas
3. An Old Fashioned Christmas
4. Jingle Bells Around The World
5. Christmas Hop
6. Medley Of Foreign Carols
7. Round About Christmas
8. Santa Claus Sleigh Ride
9. The Story Of Christmas
10. Christmas Dinner Country Style
11. Reprise Medley
12. Medley Of English Carols

Success Story, Volume 11 Plus Bonus

Here's another great album that I used to share but which is now on CD. And that's a good thing, because that means you can hear this one in all the crystal clear fidelity that it so richly deserves. Let me see if I can find a link for you to buy this...Ahh, here's a link to Amazon for ya. If you don't recognize the cover, this is The Voices Of Walter Schumann-The Voices Of Christmas (RCA Victor LPM-1141, Mono, 1955).

Now that you've promised to go out and buy the CD I mentioned above, I've got a special little present for you. Turns out Mr. Schumann and his voices recorded a Christmas song for RCA that isn't on the record. But it is on the record above and the single below. No idea how this got left off the record, it's a pretty nice little song written by Mr. Schumann and a couple other folks. This is The Voices Of Walter Schumann-The Sound Of Christmas from To Wish You A Merry Christmas-The RCA Victor Family (RCA Victor 3x7" 45 RPM EPC-1037, Mono, 1954)

I need to look up the date of this single... Ahh, 1953. So RCA-Victor 47-5542 was out the year before it was compiled onto the album above.

Still More Disco For Your Christmas

Think you can stand any more disco for Christmas? I'm guessing that many of you are reaching the tipping point. Perhaps I'll slack off after this one share from 2006. This one actually has some original music on it, not just your old royalty-free chestnuts. Please download and enjoy Christmas Disco Party (Classic Christmas CCR 1941, Stereo, 1979).

1. Santa Claus Is Disco'n To Town
2. All I Want For Christmas Is A Disco Beat
3. Jingle Bell Disco Rock
4. Dancin' In A Winter Wonderland
5. What I Want For Christmas (Is Just To Have You Here)
6. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
7. The Beat Moves On
8. Rock Around The Christmas Tree (With Me)
9. (Gonna Have A) Disco Christmas Party

Living In Florida

One of the amazing things about living in Florida is the possibility of being eaten at any time. You've got to keep your eyes open. People forget that, and they get in trouble. Every few days, there's something in the paper or on the news about someone who's little dog is eaten by an alligator that they didn't know was there. Well, people, let me tell you, they are everywhere in Florida. This one was on the side of the road this afternoon, not fifty feet from two different subdivisions. The temperature dropped last night after a cold front passed through, and he was no doubt trying to warm up after a hard night. In case you can't get a sense of scale in the picture, he's probably about 8 feet long, from the tip of his snout to the tip of his tail. I watched him for maybe 15 minutes, and he only moved once. Well, he moved his head a little bit to keep his eye on me, but after I'd been there for a bit, he didn't even do that.

Other than his teeth, his tail is the most dangerous part. Once that thing starts whipping around, it packs a lot of momentum. One good whack to you and you're going down.

If you look close, you might see a little pink on his lower jaw. At first I thought that was blood from a recent meal, but it turns out to be some little flowers in the grass in front of him.

Just in case you thought I was being a little reckless by getting this close to a major predator, I wanted to show you that there was a pretty stout chain link fence between him and me. I wasn't about to get on the other side of that fence, even though he probably would have just waddled off into the water. I didn't want to take that chance. If this guy gets much bigger, they'll probably come along and trap him, then turn him into boots and tasty gator bites.

A Little More Disco For Your Christmas

You didn't think I was going to stop with just one disco disc today, did you? Nope, I'm going to post disco Christmas until I can't stand it anymore, and that may mean I'm going to stop pretty quickly. Our next foray into the seedy nightlife is this record from the great state of Montana. OK, maybe not. I don't think Montana was ever a known hotbed of disco, but someone must have liked the name. I first shared this out in 2007 and here it is back again. Please download Montana Orchestra-Merry Christmas (MJS 3302, Stereo) .

1. Montana Christmas Medley
2. Get Down New Year's Eve
3. New Year's Eve One More Time (Reprise)

A Little Disco For Your Christmas

You may think I'm all about old vinyl around here, and you'd be right. But the late seventies are now far enough in the past to count as old. And that means disco! Here is the first of several disco Christmas records I've shared out over the years that I want to revisit today. The problem with many of these Christmas disco records is that they are often the same. And I don't just mean they sound the same. They often feature the same performances by the same people, just re-titled and re-sleeved. But I'm going to try and avoid that problem today. I'm going to start with this share from 2007 that I don't think has the reissue problem. This is Disco Belles-Tis The Night To Disco (51 West (CBS) Q 16080, Stereo, 1979). Enjoy!

1. Winter Wonderland
2. The Twelve Days Of Christmas
3. Jingle Bells
4. Sleigh Ride
5. The Little Drummer Boy
6. O Tannenbaum
7. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
8. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
9. We Wish You A Merry Christmas
10. Auld Lang Syne

Note-This was originally two mixed sides, but I cut it into tracks for convenience sake. Any abrubt edits are my fault.

I've Got Spurrs That Jingle, Jangle, Jingle

One of the great lost Christmas albums you've never heard...wait, that's probably saying too much. One of the pretty good Christmas albums...That's still probably overstating it. This is an OK Christmas album for being put out by a group of religious singers sponsored by Chrysler. I dare say this is the best Christmas album ever put out by a group of religious teens sponsored by a car company. Well, right after The Going Thing. From one of my original shares in 2005, this is Christmas; Time For Song Featuring Thurlow Spurr And The Spurrlows Singing 12 Seasonal Favorites! (Word Records, WST-8310-LP, c. 1966). The cover below is from The Spurrlows-'Tis The Season Let Us Sing (Word WST-8310-LP), which I at first thought was more Christmas music by the same folks, but it turns out to just be the same tracks on a different album. Oh, well.

1. Joy To The World
2. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
3. Away In A Manger
4. The First Noel
5. Hark The Herald Angels Sing
6. Silent Night, Holy Night
7. Jingle Bells
8. White Christmas
9. Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer
10. The Little Drummer Boy
11. Winter Wonderland
12. The Christmas Song

The Littlest Lullaby?

Here are a couple of nice Christmas stories for you by movie stars from an earlier era. Loretta Young and Gregory Peck each get a side here, and both tell charming stories of Christmas. I believe each side was once it's own set of 78s, but their combined here into a single LP. I'm not too certain of my date, either. They hadn't issued too many albums in 1949, so that may be when they first released this material on 78. Anyhow, these are some good sides that I've been sharing with you since 2006. Please download Loretta Young-The Littlest Angel and Gregory Peck-Lullaby Of Christmas (Decca DLP 8009, Mono, 1949).

Chimes W/ Organ

Here's another entry in a great long line of organ and chime LPs I've shared with you this season. I'm a sucker for anything that says Hi-Fi in the title, and that's how I got roped into this one. I've only been sharing this out since last year, and it's never proven very popular, but I'm going to give it another chance tonight. Why don't you download and listen to Hank Sylvern-Christmas In Hi-Fi: Chimes, Bells And Organ (ABC-Paramount ABC-146, Mono, 1956)?

1. Joy To The World
2. Away In A Manger
3. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
4. The First Noel
5. Deck The Hall
6. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
7. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
8. We Three Kings Of Orient Are
9. Jingle Bells
10. The Cherry Tree Carol
11. O Come, All Ye Faithful
12. Silent Night

The Proper Ornaments

I thought some of you might like to see some of the ornaments from the Christmas tree at work. I work at a sheet metal company, and many years, if we're not super busy, we'll design and cut out a fancy stainless steel Christmas ornament, then hand them out to employees, customers and prospective customers. The newest one is the angel above, celebrating our 35th year in business. I haven't been there that long, but some days it feels like it.

This snowflake was probably the most well received ornament. It took a long time to make these because of the little tiny scallops on the edges. And since this came out in 2001, we made sure to put a patriotic little USA on there.

Frosty is always a big hit, whether he's made of snow or stainless steel.

I was never sure what city that's supposed to be that Santa is flying over? We've got shops in Bradenton, Lakeland and Daytona Beach, Florida, as well as one in Twinsburg, Ohio. None of those places has a skyline that looks quite like this.

No, we did not cut the bell from silver. It cost enough to cut it from SS sheet. I think the only one of these I'm missing here is a sleigh we did that was so big and heavy you couldn't hang it on the tree. I'm still looking for one of those, but I'm not very optimistic that I'll find it before Christmas.

Organ W/ Chimes

I first shared this album out in 2006 because I couldn't figure out the cover. What is this a picture of? One of my visitors finally set me straight, and now I can see it, but it took me a while. What do you see? Maybe it helps if you cross your eyes. Since then, I've discovered that the same music from this LP is on several more LPs under slightly different names. I'm not going to elaborate because I hope to post about it someday, and I don't want to spoil the surprise. But don't hold your breath, because it's not that exciting. In the meantime, why don't you download Godfrey Malcolm & Fredrico-Chimes Of Christmas (Brigade P-1320S, Stereo)?

1. Joy To The World
2. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
3. Silent Night
4. It Came Upon The Midnight Clear

16. God Give Ye Merry Christmastide
17. Deck The Halls
18. We Three Kings Of Orient Are

Something Different

You want something a little different? I don't think I've brought you a locally produced and distributed record in a while. So here's a little something from Cleveland. Success Story, Volume 10

I found this record many years before I considered myself to be a collector of Christmas music. I bought albums sometimes, but because I liked the artist or the cover, and I think this fell into the cover category. Later on, as my interest in Christmas music grew, I played this and realized what a great album it was. I even shared it out back in 2005, again in 2006 and yet again in 2007. But I found out in October of '08 that someone had finally decided to bring this great LP into the digital age, legally that is. So if you want to hear this one, you can head on over to Amazon and download it! For Google, this is The Surfers-Christmas From Hawaii (HiFi R410, 1959, Mono).

Bells Of Christmas

Here's another one of those covers that's just really great but the music isn't so exciting. It's OK, I guess, but the cover far outshines it. I first shared this out in 2006, and I think it's high time I bring it back. Please download Christmas Bells-Cathedral Organ and Chimes Featuring Richard Keys Biggs (Capitol T9013, Mono, 1954).

1. Silent Night
2. Adeste Fideles (Oh Come All Ye Faithful)
3. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

15. Away In A Manger
16. God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen
17. Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring
18. Good Christian Men, Rejoice
19. Deck The Halls
20. Christ Was Born On Christmas Day
21. Joy To The World
22. Silent Night

Braun (Not Gillette)

I hear from a lot of people who fondly remember Ruth Lyons and her TV show. It was way before my time, and in a different part of the country, but because the show spawned a couple of great Christmas albums, I'm familiar with it. What I wasn't familiar with, at least before last year, was that one of the other members of the show had put out a Christmas album. I'm in the habit of picking up pretty much every Christmas LP I see and taking a look to see if I can find something interesting about it. That was the case with this one, and I noticed a couple of songs on it that were written by Ruth Lyons. So I read the liner notes and realized what I had. And now, you can have it too. Please download Bob Braun, Orchestra Conducted By Leroy Holmes-Christmas In Your Heart (United Artists UAS 6664, Stereo, 1968).

1. Christmas In Your Heart
2. Everywhere The Bells Are Ringing
3. Do You Hear What I Hear
4. A Marshmellow (sic) World
5. A Child's First Christmas
6. Let's Light The Christmas Tree
7. Christmas Lullaby

9. That's What Christmas Means To Me

The Big Winter

Here's the last of my Hugo shares, and this time it's a full LP. Well, sort of. I believe this was first released as the 10" record you see below, Christmas Magic (RCA Victor LPM 3132, Mono). That recording was later expanded a little bit with the addition of two non-Christmas songs into the 12" record I'm sharing with you. A few weeks ago, I found another LP from Hugo that featured those two non-Christmas songs, and I remember wanting to tell you I'd found where they came from. But, with all the holiday rush, I forgot what I did with the LP, and I also forgot the title. So I can't share my new-found info with you. Maybe next year. Anyhow, to complete your Winterhalter collection, please download Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra And Chorus-Christmas Magic (RCA Camden CAL-449, Mono, 1958). This is one of those great albums that I've been sharing out since year 1, or as you might know it, 2005. Why isn't this on CD? With all these bonus tracks I've dug up, they could present a pretty nice collection. Add in a few tracks where Hugo and his orchestra back up any one of RCA's singers of the period, and you've got a really great collection!

1. White Christmas
2. Winter Wonderland
3. I'd Love To Hitch A Ride With Santa Claus-That Christmas Feeling
4. That's What I Want For Christmas
5. Carol Of The Bells
6. Christmas Island
7. Swingin' On A Star
8. Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly-Wassail Song
9. Away In A Manger-I Saw Three Ships
10. The Second Star To The Right

One More Hugo

I know EP day is over, but I had to bring you this single track from Hugo Winterhalter. I shared this out for the first time way back in 2006 at Christmastime because I couldn't wait for Christmas In July where it really belongs. That year it was in mono, but I eventually found the stereo version, which is what you're getting here. Please download Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra-Sleigh Ride from Wish You Were Here (RCA Victor LSP-1904, Stereo, 1959).

EP Day, Part 13

I do believe I promised you more from Hugo Winterhalter, and sure enough, here he is with orchestra and chorus in tow, playing all the Christmas hits for you. Well, at least two Christmas hits. From my huge Hugo blowout in 2007, this is Hugo Winterhalter's Orchestra And Chorus-Blue Christmas b/w White Christmas (RCA Victor 7" 45 rpm 47-3937, Mono). Do I need to mention that there might be more Winterhalter in your future?

EP Day, Part 12

Am I saving the best for last? Nah, I think I shared the best with you first thing this morning, but I did save some pretty good for last. From the great Hugo Winterhalter, a couple of cha-cha tracks that will get you out on the dance floor in no time. Please downloadHugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra-The Christmas Song Cha Cha b/w Rudolph The Red-Nose Cha Cha (RCA Victor 7" 45 RPM 47-7397, Mono). I first shared both sides of this single with you back in 2007, but I shared the Rudolph song from an Italian LP here.

This isn't the end of the Winterhalter. Stay tuned a little while...

EP Day, Part 11

I was never happy with this cover image. As you can see it's all oxidized and the color has shifted over the years. But it was all I had available when I shared out this record in 2007. That's why I'm happy to reshare it with you tonight and give you the new cover I found below. Not only is it in much better shape, it's completely different! It's got the same catalog number, though, and I believe the music is identical. But if you want it, be sure you grab it and save it, it's not in the download file. Oh, speaking of the download file, here's Christmas At The Hawaiian Village With Alfred Apaka And The Hawaiian Village Serenaders (Hawaiian Village HV-EP-2, Mono).

1. Winter Wonderland
2. Joy To The World (Hauoli Ka Honua)
3. Jingle Bells-Mele Kalikimaka
4. Silent Night (Po Hama 'U')

Success Story, Volume 9

I don't know how I keep forgetting to mention this one. I was very excited when I found and shared this record with you last year. It's one of those things that they made millions of back in the day, but few of them have survived in playable shape. And now I'm happy to tell you that you can purchase this on CD! And I even had a nice little chat with one of the guys who helped to put it out on CD. I got an email a few months ago asking me about it, and I was scared at first. I figured it was a record company about to put me on notice for sharing out their product. But the guy was very nice about. He just wondered if I could send him some big scans since they couldn't locate the original artwork in the Hanna Barbera archives, and he'd like to see if they could use them. I doubt if they used my scans, since the copy I had was pretty beat up, but at least I got some sense of being invloved. Anyhow, my share is no longer active, so go buy this CD! For the search engines, this is Hanna-Barbera Present Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Singing Songs Of Christmas (Hanna Barbera Records HLP 2033, Mono, 1965).

Christmas Recycling

I just noticed something odd. This Bing Crosby had somehow migrated to the top of the stack of 45s that sit near my computer. Something about it caught my eye. Then it hit me. That Santa Claus in the middle, the one hanging by the ribbon. I've seen that somewhere. And it was sometime recently. Then it hit me. If you head on over to A Christmas Yuleblog and check out the Jimmie Davis LP that the Captain is sharing (a great compliment to my own Jimmie Davis share, I might add), it's the same Santa in the background of that LP cover! They've flipped the image left-for-right, and it's a bit out of focus (since it's not supposed to be the focus of the picture, Jimmie is), but it's the same image. You can see a bit of the happy girl ornament above Santa's cap. Cool, eh? FYI, the EP above is Bing Crosby-ChristmasTime (Decca ED 2547 7" 45 RPM, Mono). I'm not sharing it since the music is widely available on any number of Bing Crosby CDs. This sort of thing has happened to me before, by the way...

EP Day, Part 10

2006 was a great year for the blog, especially during the Christmas sharity season. There were lots of new shares that year with only a few reruns here and there. I think I put up more posts that year than any other. And one of the more interesting posts from that year was this little 10" record from Brazil. I didn't know much about it then, and I know just about the same now. I do know that I get a lot of hits on this one from internet searches. No idea why. It's a nice cover, too. I remember the vinyl was noisy, so don't go after this one if you're a big fan of clean sound. But if you don't mind a little snap, crackle and pop with your music as well as your breakfast cereal, please download Natal no Brasil (Copacabana CLP 3087, 10" 33 RPM, Mono)

1. Elizete Cardoso com Orquestra e Cõro de Severino Filho-Cantiga De Natal
2. Black-Out comm Orquestra e Cõro-Natal Das Criancas
3. Ángela Maria com Orquestra e Cõro-Outros Natais
4. Sõnia Delfino com Orquestra e Cõro do Club do Guri-Sino De Belem (Jingle Bells)
5. Ángela Maria e João Dias com Orquestra-Papai Noel Esqueceu
6. Leny Eversong com Aloysio, seu Conjunto e Cõro-Prece De Natal
7. Duo Brasil Moreno com Orquestra e Cõro-Noite Feliz
8. Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Bandinha-Boas Festas

EP Day, Part 9

I hear what you're saying out there. You've gotten some polka from me, some dance music, plenty of big band, a little country, all you lack is some square dancing. Well, wait no more. From my big blowout of 2006, this is Danny Robinson With The Square Tunes Band-Deck The Halls (Square Tunes 140, 7" 45 RPM, Mono).

EP Day, Part 8

Mitch Miller and Christmas just seem to go together, especially to people who can remember seeing him on TV in the sixties. I never saw him, but I've seen enough copies of his two Christmas albums to last me a lifetime. But back in 2006 I dug up this single that features a song that wasn't on either of those albums. So you know you'll want to downloadMitch Miller & The Gang-Be A Santa (Columbia 4-42240, 7" 45 rpm, Mono, 1961).

EP Day, Part 7

You need more Christmas music on the organ like you need another hole in the head, but I just can't stop throwing it up here. At least this one doesn't have any chimes, at least none I can remember. I don't think I've reshared this one since I first put it up here in 2005, so get it now before you have to wait another 4 years. This is Bob Coe At The Pipe Organ-White Christmas/Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town (Leaf R 6126).

1. White Christmas
2. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

EP Day, Part 6

Another entry into today's rehash of random EPs I've shared out over the years. This time it's more organ music from Lew White. Well, not more Lew white, but more organ. I guess I wasn't too clear there. This is from back in 2006, if I remember correctly. I think I bought it up in the fancy record store in St. Pete. None of that really matters, I suppose. Here's the part you really want, download Lew White, Organist, With Chorus And Instrumental Accompaniment-Christmas Time (RCA Camden 7" 45 rpm CAE-126, Mono).

1. Silent Night
2. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
3. O Little Town Of Bethlehem
4. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

EP Day, Part 5

I may as well throw up this other flexi-disc while I'm at it. This one is probably more interesting than the others, both in content and the fact that it's double sided. Most flexis are so thin that you can play the same music from either side, but no this one. Look close at the picture above and you can see that the contents are even printed backwards for the flip side. This record was made both by and for employees of General Motors. Funny how they could spend money on something like this back in the day, yet they go bankrupt in 2009. I guess it's all in the game. I promise that this free download won't bankrupt you. Here's Songs Of Christmas By The General Motors Chorus (Eva-Tone 7" 33 RPM Clear Flexi Disc). I originally shared this in 2007, BTW.

EP Day, Part 4

What's red, flexible and doesn't come from Pizza Hut? How about this second bright red flexi-disc? No idea where this one originally came from, but it features the semi-famous Mundell Lowe. I've never seen any other Christmas music from Mr. Lowe, so that makes this something truly interesting. And I think you need a little more 'interesting' in your life. Please download The Mundell Lowe Ensemble-The Sounds Of Christmas (Ameridisc Red Flexidisc, Mono). This pretty piece of sound ephemera was first shared back in 2007, which seemed to be a poplar year for me and flexi-discs.

1. Medley: Adeste Fidelis, O Little Town of Bethlehem, The First Noel, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Silent Night and Joy To The World

EP Day, Part 3

What's red, flexible and comes from Pizza Hut? No, it's not a plain tomato pizza, it's the red flexi-disc from the seventies you see above. When I found and shared this one back in 2007, I'd never seen another. And come to think of it, I haven't seen one since. I guess that makes it sort of rare. So if you want a little something rare, why don't you download Walt Woodward-A Children's Christmas (Eva-Tone Red 6" 33 RPM Flexidisc 1120785XS, Mono, 1978)?

EP Day, Part 2

You gotta love Lorne Greene. I say that every year, but it's so true. And this single is no exception. These two tracks didn't show up on either The Bonanza Christmas LP, nor Greene's solo Christmas LP. So you really need them. Here is Lorne Greene-Must Be Santa (RCA Victor 47-9037, Mono, 1966).

1. Must Be Santa
2. One Solitary Life

EP Day, Part 1

I've been throwing shares at you guys left and right for weeks now and I hope it hasn't been too much. I've tried to limit myself to full album shares whenever possible, so you get the most use out of those precious RapidShare slots. But today I want to really bombard you with some stuff from much smaller records. I've got a bunch of these to draw your attention to, and I'm going to start with one of the best ever. This collection of funny tunes is a great slice of Christmas from the world of Spike Jones and, well, I don't know who else. It's just funny stuff. So if you like funny, please download Yogi Yorgesson With Johnny Duffy And The Scandahoovians-Yingle Bells (Capitol 7" 45 rpm EAP 1-461, Mono, 1951). This is another one of those records that I've shared out since year one around here, and I'm going to keep sharing it as long as possible!

1. The Christmas Party
2. I Yust Go Nuts At Christmas
3. I Was Santa Claus At The School House (For The P.T.A.)
4. Yingle Bells
